Last Friday both the Year 10 and 11 drama classes went on an outing to see 'Frankenstein' at the Uptown Geneva Theatre. This particular theatrical version of Mary Shelley's classic work was performed in English and definitely presented it in an interesting and unexpected way.
The play offered many different sides to the story with different layers that combined a mixture of genres. It provided comedic elements which often stemmed from the character's interaction with the audience. The entertaining and slightly odd characters such as Igor further enhanced certain comical aspects of the play. This version of 'Frankenstein' was also able to provoke many thoughts within the audience's minds. It made us think, and caused us to ponder upon many of the deeper aspects and themes of the piece e.g. Is it wrong to try and change human nature?
Unfortunately, there were some hindering features of the play as well. In my opinion, I found that it dragged on too long and certain scenes seemed rather 'déjà vu' in the sense that they were slightly repetitive. At points, it was also slightly confusing as the four cast members played several characters each. This was not an obtrusive flaw however, as it did not take long to come to an understanding of who was who.
Overall, I very much enjoyed the performance of Frankenstein at the Uptown Geneva Theatre. It made me laugh and feel sad both in one piece of drama. However the fact that certain scenes dragged on too long did ruin it slightly, as I found myself feeling bored and awaiting the end of the play as it drew to a close.
