The story unfolds in the Victorian era where a deranged woman in a bridal outfit, Emilia Ricoletti, has just killed herself after publicly shooting at people in the street. But hours after her death Emilia rises from the dead to kill her husband. Can Holmes solve the mystery of The Abominable Bride?
After two (long) years of absence, the acclaimed “high-functioning sociopath” and “consultant detective”, Sherlock Holmes, returns to the screen in the mind-twisting christmas special. Despite its overall negative reviews, this “inception-like” episode, with its juggled scenes between the 19th and 21st century was, for any fan of Sherlock Holmes a nice return to the overdramatic, adventurous, and whimsical nature that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle entranced his readers with when his story was first published. Steven Moffat, co-creator of the acclaimed series, has referred to this “Episode 0” as a “preview” of the events set to unfold in Season 4: Is Moriarty, Sherlock’s arch-nemesis truly dead? Or has he found a way to cheat death itself? With an episode this time much grimmer and darker than usual, some scenes, or characters, such as the abominable bride herself, face and veil covered in blood throughout the episode, truly show a contrast with the usual tone that the audience was accustomed to.
This episode however, despite its inception-like plot, welcomes back the beloved “consultant criminal”, James Moriarty in an epic confrontation in the 19th century, and knows how to please all Sherlock Holmes fans by its many references and possible hints for the future of the Series.
